Geneva: Morocco’s Justice Minister Ouahbi Meets with Counterparts at HRC 55th Session

Morocco’s Justice Minister Abdelatif Ouahbi held discussions on Monday with ministers and officials from various countries focusing on enhancing judicial administration and advancing human rights, at the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), presided over by Morocco’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, Ambassador Omar Zniber.

The 55th session of the HRC opened in the presence of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN General Assembly President Denis Francis, High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, and Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis.

The council, representing 47 countries, will review over 100 reports on the status of human rights in 45 countries, including housing, food, cultural rights, climate change and environment, conditions of human rights advocates, children in armed conflict, persons with disabilities, racial discrimination, and xenophobia, among other topics. It will also hold 23 interactive discussions with special rapporteurs.

In a meeting with Malian couterpart Mamadou Kassogue, Morocco’s Justice Minister highlighted the importance of judicial cooperation, underlining the need for modernization and improvement of countries’ judicial systems, governance, and administration efficiency.

During the conversations, Kassogue expressed Mali’s intention to work with the kingdom on “digital justice transformation,” taking advantage of Moroccan know how in preparing international reports in the field of human rights as well as cooperation in child protection and migration management.

Ouahbi and Gabon’s Justice Minister, Paul-Marie Gondjout, discussed the strong ties between the two countries, confirming their commitment to enhancing judicial cooperation and promoting mutual benefit through exchange of experiences in improving judicial governance.

Raul Vasquez, Under-secretary of the Philippine Ministry of Justice, and Saidov Akmal Holmatovič, Director of Uzbekistan’s National Center for Human Rights, addressed with Ouahbi strengthening cooperation and exchanges of judicial and judicial-related experience, as well as the digitalization of the legal field.
