A delegation from Uzbekistan has toured Georgia’s human rights institutions to learn how the nation has advanced in human rights.
The ‘UPR project, implemented by UNDP, has conducted a study tour to Georgia’s human rights institutions from December 18 to 20. This delegation from Uzbekistan included representatives of the National Human Rights Centre of the Republic of Uzbekistan and UNDP.
The study tour reviewed the reforms implemented in Georgia to improve human rights legislation, monitoring and reporting as well as follow up on human rights, while it also studied planned future reforms. It is intended that the lessons learned during the study will be applied within Uzbekistan’s human rights implementation process.
The participants of the tour note that the study tour has been comprehensive.
During the visit, meetings were held with representatives of the Secretariat for Human Rights, the Administration of the Government of Georgia, the National Council of Georgia for Human Rights, the Department of Political Planning and Coordination, and the Administration of the Government of Georgia.
Meetings were also held with representatives of the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Analytical Department of the Ministry of Justice and the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In addition, meetings were held with representatives of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Civil Integration, the Committee on Gender Issues and the Council on Gender Equality of the Parliament of Georgia.
During the discussions, issues were discussed such as coordinating follow-up and systematic monitoring of the implementation of international and national regulatory frameworks for human rights, the experience of monitoring based on indicators (mechanisms, procedures, methodology), as well as possible areas of cooperation and exchange of experience. Special attention was drawn to issues on Improving the data collection system for inclusion in national human rights reports and the SDGs.
Applying these lessons to Uzbekistan’s circumstances is going to bring us closer to achieving both international and national targets in improving human rights.
